There was an old elephant
Who walked beneath the sun
He carried many stories
Of places he had come from
He remembered every river
He remembered every tree
And somewhere in the quiet
He remembered you and me
Years could change the road
And seasons could move on
But some things stay inside the heart
Long after they are gone
They say an elephant remembers
Everything it ever knew
Every road and every summer
Every face it once passed through
But if memory is a kind of love
Then maybe I remember too
No matter where the years may take me
I'll always remember you
He found the old acacia
Where they had stood before
The branches had grown taller
But he knew it by the shore
He listened to the silence
He watched the evening fall
And though the herd had moved along
He still remembered all
The world can change its colors
The footprints disappear
But some familiar footsteps
Still sound inside your ear
They say an elephant remembers
Everything it ever knew
Every road and every summer
Every face it once passed through
But if memory is a kind of love
Then maybe I remember too
No matter where the years may take me
I'll always remember you
One day the young ones asked him
Why he stopped beside the tree
He said,
"There are some places
That still belong to me"
"Not because I need to stay there
Not because I can't move on
But because the ones I loved there
Are never truly gone"
They say an elephant remembers
Everything it ever knew
Every road and every summer
Every dream that once came true
And if memory is a kind of love
Then maybe love remembers too
No matter where the years may take us
I'll always remember you
There was an old elephant
Who walked beneath the sun
Carrying all his stories
And the ones he loved as one
