Meet Me Under the Light

Boom—boom! Sha-doo! Meet me under the light! Sha-la-la! I saw her where the avenue was turning blue, streetlamp gold on a red coat coming through. She gave me half a smile and started walking slow— Uh-oh, there she go! Sha-doo-wop! I called, “Baby, you forgot one thing!” She laughed, “Got my coat, my keys—everything.” I tapped my chest twice, “Then what’s this beating here?” Boom-boom! Case is clear! Come near! Come near! Train doors closing— Don’t let ’em close! One step closer— There he goes! Before that whistle takes you, there’s one thing you should know— Meet me under the light— Sha-doo, tonight! Where every window goes dark, I’ll leave you one little spark. All night! Meet me under the light, where I first saw your eyes. Same lamp— Same corner! Same moon— Same guy! Meet me under the light tonight! Same lamp, same corner, I know where he’ll be— Sha-la! Sha-la! One heart keeps time under that old streetlight— Boom… boom! Wait for me! Rain danced down the fire escape, taxi tires humming down the avenue late. Two hot coffees—I only needed one. Getting cold, stubborn son! Wait, wait, wait! Then click-click-click from the other side— red coat flying, smile she couldn’t hide. She said, “You really waited?” I said, “Look above.” Same old lamp! Same old love! Train keeps rolling— Let it roll! Night keeps moving— Hold that soul! Some hearts need no map, just one light to lead them home— Meet me under the light— Sha-doo, tonight! Where every window goes dark, I’ll leave you one little spark. All night! Meet me under the light, where I first saw your eyes. Same lamp— Same corner! Same moon— Same guy! Meet me under the light tonight! Tomorrow? Too long! Next week? No, no, no! Forever? Whoa, son! Take it slow! Then she took my hand— Well? And missed her train. OH! Sha-la-la-la-la! Meet me under the light! UNDER THE LIGHT! When the whole wide avenue falls out of sight— I’ll be there! Last train gone, streetlamp burning, second cup cold— but she came running. Meet me under the light, under the light tonight! Stay! Stay! Stay! Same lamp— SAME LAMP! Same corner— SAME CORNER! Same heart— Boom-boom! Same lamp— Same lamp. Same corner— Same corner. You came. BOOM!
